Reds manager Dusty Baker kept in hospital

CINCINNATI (AP) ? Reds manager Dusty Baker stayed in a Chicago hospital on Saturday, getting another day of treatment for an irregular heartbeat while his team tried to clinch the NL Central title.

The 63-year-old manager was hospitalized Wednesday while the Reds were in Chicago because of the heart problem that he's had for some time. He's missed the last three games as Cincinnati closed in on its second division title in three years.

The Reds had hoped to have him back as they prepared for a division-clinching celebration, but doctors in Chicago were being cautious.

"The report is they want to give him one more day, make sure everything is fine before they release him," said bench coach Chris Speier, who is running the team in Baker's absence. "Probably a much-needed another day of rest away from (the media) and this whole situation. It's stressful, as I've found out the last couple of days.

"They just want one more day. Probably give him the OK to come home tomorrow."

The Reds were in position to clinch the title on Saturday with a win over Los Angeles at Great American Ball Park or a Cardinals loss to the Cubs in Chicago earlier in the day.

Speier made a few changes to the lineup for the Reds' second game against the Dodgers, who are vying for the final NL wild card berth. He gave left fielder Ryan Ludwick another day to let a sore groin heal rather than put him back on the field. He also dropped shortstop Zack Cozart to eighth in the lineup.

Cozart missed 14 games with a strained muscle in his left side. He returned Friday night in a 3-1, 10-inning loss to the Dodgers, batted second and went 0 for 4 with two strikeouts and two groundouts, prompting Speier to drop him lower in the order on Saturday.

"I said you know what? Let's have him relax a little bit, take some of the pressure off and let him get back in the swing of things," Speier said. "So we'll see how that goes."

Left-handed closer Aroldis Chapman has been cleared to pitch after being sidelined since Sept. 11 by a tired shoulder. Speier said he doesn't want to use him to close a game his first time back on the mound.

"Just give him an inning's worth of work and get him back on the (mound) and kind of see what we've got and not put undue pressure on him to do that after not being out there for a while," Speier said.

Psychology can explain and improve bad classroom behavior

ScienceDaily (Sep. 19, 2012) ? A new monograph published by the British Journal of Educational Psychology published September 21, 2012 brings together evidence from psychological research to help readers understand the causes of anti-social behaviour and what can be done to curb it.

Psychology and Antisocial Behaviour in School looks at the evidence from psychology for understanding troublesome behaviour in schools, dealing with behaviour in general, specific types of behaviour such as bullying, developmental disorders such as autistic spectrum disorder and ADHD, and with different explanations for social emotional and behavioural difficulties such as social identity, information processing and social competence.

The emphasis is on empirically based psychological theory and research evidence and its relation to interventions in school. Findings from data gathered from a range of countries including Brazil, China, North America, Spain and the UK are reported.

Professor Pam Maras from the University of Greenwich, one of the editors of the monograph, says: "Young people's behaviour in and out of school currently receives a great deal of academic, media, and government attention, with many commentators expressing concern about the 'state of youth'. However, whilst antisocial behaviour in schools is a topic of major international concern, there is a surprising dearth of work on the psychological explanations for its occurrence, or on interventions founded on such explanations. This monograph is intended to address that deficit."

Computer And Technology: New Wireless Technology Shows ...

An increasing number of businesses, municipalities, and individuals are seeing the benefits of wireless Internet access. It's really no wonder that this type of technology is growing increasingly popular because of its flexibility and the fact that it offers an economical way to put a lot of different devices and their users onto the Internet or a Local Area Network. Wireless hot spots are great for flexible use and varying numbers of users. After all, how could there be a better way to supply Internet access to all of the computers in an office, as well as the laptops and Blackberry type devices that employees bring in and use on a variable basis? The same flexibility makes wireless hot spots an attractive thing to install in coffee shops, airports, libraries, and even homes.

There are currently several widely available varieties of wireless Internet access. The most common by far is Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi is a short range type of wireless networking that's commonly associated with the wireless hot spots you'd find in a coffee shop or bookstore. It's extremely cost effective and easy to set up just by hooking a wireless router into a broadband Internet connection.

G3 is another popular way to get onto the Internet wirelessly. A G3 network uses technology that's similar to the cellular technology that allows for the used of mobile phones. G3 technology allows smart phones and laptops to connect to the Internet over cell phone towers and while moving at extremely fast speeds like on a train or in a car(the Doppler effect can ruin some types of wireless connections even at relatively slow speeds) and over a very wide area. It's been the technology of choice for professionals who need to stay connected while on the go.

Now there's a type of wireless technology that could serve as severe competition to G3. This type of technology is called WiMax and it combines many of the best points of both Wi-Fi and G3 technologies. Like G3, WiMax can operate over extremely large distances- up to 30 miles. Like Wi-Fi, WiMax is extremely effective indoors- which is something that G3 technology doesn't do so well. WiMax is also much faster than Wi-Fi. The combination of speed and large coverage area makes WiMax extremely effective for providing large numbers of people with high speed Internet access.

One thing that WiMax doesn't do as well as G3 is provide mobile Internet access. That's because at the frequencies that WiMax carriers are currently licensed to operate at the Doppler effect is an issue, while the frequencies that G3 is licensed to use aren't as effected by the movement of the user.

However, this shortcoming of WiMax compared to G3 is simply a regulatory issue. WiMax would be just as good for mobile devices as G3 is if it was licensed to use the same frequencies. And there lies the major explanation for why it hasn't been widely adopted yet- lobbying on the part of companies that have a lot invested in G3 networks and don't want the competition of a technology that could serve more people in a wider variety of ways.

Of course there is the hope that the two technologies will be able to coexist- even possibly in the same devices- so that they can be used in the situations that suit them best.

Who are Mitt Romney's 47 percent? A breakdown

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Just which 47 percent of Americans was Mitt Romney talking about? It's hard to say. He lumped together three different ways of sorting people in what he's called less-than-elegant remarks.

Each of those three groups ? likely Obama voters, people who get federal benefits and people who don't pay federal income taxes ? contains just under half of all Americans, in the neighborhood of 47 percent at a given moment. There's some overlap, but the groups are quite distinct.

Confusingly, Romney spoke as if they're made up of the same batch of Americans.

OBAMA VOTERS

What Romney said: "There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what."

He's right on the nose, according to the latest Associated Press-GfK poll: Forty-seven percent of likely voters say they support Obama. And 46 percent say they support Romney, essentially a tie. This number fluctuates from poll to poll and week to week and could shift substantially before Election Day.

Who they are:

?Most are employed: Sixty-two percent of the Obama voters work, including the 10 percent working only part time. A fourth are retired. Five percent say they're temporarily unemployed.

?Most earn higher-than-average wages. Fifty-six percent have household incomes above the U.S. median of $50,000. Just 16 percent have incomes below $30,000, and about the same share (20 percent) have incomes of $100,000 or more.

?They're all ages but skew younger than Romney's voters: Twenty percent are senior citizens and 12 percent are under age 30.

?They're more educated than the overall population: Forty-three percent boast four-year college degrees or above; 21 percent topped out with a high school diploma.

PEOPLE WHO GET FEDERAL BENEFITS

What Romney said: "There are 47 percent ... who are dependent on government ... who believe they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you name it."

Whether they are dependent and believe they are entitled to anything is arguable, but Romney's statistic is about right ? 49 percent of the U.S. population receive some kind of federal benefit, including Social Security and Medicare, according to the most recent Census Bureau data. Looking only at people who receive benefits that are based on financial need, such as food stamps, the portion is smaller ? just over a third of the population. Many people get more than one type of benefit.

The biggest programs and their percentage of the U.S. population:

?Medicaid: 26 percent

?Social Security: 16 percent

?Food stamps: 16 percent

?Medicare: 15 percent

?Women, Infants and Children food program: 8 percent

THOSE WHO PAY NO FEDERAL INCOME TAX

What Romney said: "Forty-seven percent of Americans pay no income tax."

Romney's about on target ? 46 percent of U.S. households paid no federal income tax last year, according to a study by the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center. Most do pay other federal taxes, including Medicare and Social Security withholding. And they're not all poor. Some middle-income and wealthy families escape income tax because of deductions, credits and investment tax preferences.

Why they don't pay:

?About half don't earn enough money for a household of their size to owe income tax. For example, a family of four earning less than $26,400 would owe no taxes using the standard exemptions and deductions.

?About 22 percent get tax breaks for senior citizens that offset their income.

?About 15 percent get tax breaks for the working poor or low-income parents.

?Almost 3 percent get tax breaks for college tuition or other education expenses.

Who they are:

?The vast majority have below-average earnings: Among all who don't owe, 9 out of 10 make $50,000 or less.

?But some of the wealthy escape taxes, including about 4,000 households earning more than $1 million a year.
